After Your Color Service / Color Enhancement: First 72-Hour Care image

I’m going to start with the rule that protects your color more than anything else: wait 48 to 72 hours before your first shampoo. When I take my time, listen, and send you out feeling like a “white swan, ” I want that fresh color to stay looking like it did in the chair, not down the drain. In North Charleston heat and humidity, those first few days matter even more, especially if you’re sweating, commuting, or traveling near Charleston International Airport.

Quick note on pricing: our Color Service / Color Enhancement is 30 minutes and $30, and any color service is an additional charge on top of the haircut service.

The first 24 to 48 hours: lock it in before life hits

Right after your Color Service / Color Enhancement, I want you thinking “seal and protect.” Color molecules and the cuticle need a little time to settle. That’s why I generally recommend holding off on shampoo for 48 to 72 hours. If you absolutely have to rinse, keep it quick and cool, and skip shampoo.

Can I wash my hair after coloring?

Not right away. Wait 48 to 72 hours, then use a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and a good conditioner. Rinse with cool or lukewarm water only. Hot water swells the cuticle and tends to pull color out faster.

If your roots feel oily: use a light dusting of dry shampoo at the roots (not heavy buildup), and keep it off your lengths. That buys you time without stripping your fresh color.

Can I exercise after a color service?

I generally recommend avoiding heavy sweating for at least the first 72 hours. Sweat and heat can push fading, and in the Lowcountry it doesn’t take much to get your scalp heated up. If you do a light workout, keep your hair off your neck, avoid tight hats or headbands that trap heat, and let your scalp cool down before you do any rinsing.

Days 3 to 7: keep the shine, avoid the fade (especially in North Charleston sun)

This is the week where people start giving you compliments, so don’t sabotage it with the usual fade triggers. I’ve had clients tell me I took them “from an ugly duckling to a white swan, ” and that they’re getting “nothing but compliments.” A lot of that comes down to the first week habits.

The biggest “don’ts” that cause early fading

  • No pool, hot tub, or ocean for 72 hours, and longer if you can. Chlorine and salt are fast ways to dull fresh color.
  • Don’t crank the heat tools the first week. If you have to, always use heat protectant and keep passes minimal.
  • Don’t use clarifying shampoo or heavy anti-dandruff shampoos unless I’ve told you to. Those are made to strip.
  • Don’t take steaming hot showers with your hair soaking the whole time. Tie it up, use a shower cap, and keep water lukewarm when you do wash.

Lowcountry reality: UV and humidity can push brassiness and dullness faster. If you’re outside around Park Circle or running around Dorchester Road, add a UV spray or throw on a hat. It makes a difference.

The simple home routine I want you on (no product overload)

You don’t need a shelf full of stuff. You need the right basics, used consistently. Here’s what I recommend by type, so you can shop what you like and what fits your budget.

Shampoo and conditioner: sulfate-free and color-safe

This is your main “protect hair color from fading” move. Use lukewarm water, focus shampoo on the scalp, and let the suds rinse through the ends instead of scrubbing your lengths.

Heat protectant: every time you blow dry or flat iron

Color and heat are not best friends. If you like a smooth blowout, protect it so your tone stays cleaner longer.

UV protection: spray or hat for sunny days

North Charleston sun will fade color the same way it fades fabric. If you’re out and about, protect it early instead of trying to fix it later.

Toner, touch-ups, and when I want you to reach out

If something feels off, don’t sit with it. I’m big on taking my time and making sure you’re comfortable, and that doesn’t stop when you walk out the door. Our shop stays busy, but we’re not a rush-you-through kind of place. People come back because we keep it quality.

What’s usually normal

  • A little color transfer on your pillowcase or towel the first day or two.
  • Your tone settling slightly after the first couple days, especially with blondes and highlights.
  • Dryness at the ends if you’ve been heat styling or you’re out in the humidity a lot.

Reach out if you notice this

  • Your color looks dramatically different after the first wash.
  • You’re getting unexpected brassiness fast and you’re already doing cool rinses and color-safe products.
  • You’re unsure about swimming, a workout schedule, or a product you’re about to use.

Easy follow-up access: if you’re near the Dorchester Road corridor by Park Circle or passing Charleston International Airport, it’s usually simple to swing by for product pickup or a quick check. I see clients from North Charleston, Charleston, Hanahan, Ladson, Summerville, and West Ashley, so you’re not the only one fitting hair care into a busy week.

If you’re planning your next step, a toner or touch-up timeline depends on your starting color, your goal, and how fast your hair grows. Ask me at the end of your appointment and I’ll give you a straight answer, plus a plan you can actually keep up with.
